CLOUD MIGRATION PLANNER
Plan before you move workloads.
Cloud migration goes better when decisions are made before the first workload moves.
Know what you have
- Inventory applications, data stores and integrations, and who depends on each.
- Map dependencies so related systems move together.
Decide what to do with each workload
- Keep it where it is, move it as it is, adjust it for the cloud, replace it or retire it.
- Prioritise by business value and risk, and start with a lower-risk workload.
Plan the cutover
- Agree downtime windows with the business, not just IT.
- Define test steps, rollback criteria and who decides to proceed.
Be clear on security
- Cloud providers and customers share responsibility. Write down which side manages identity, patching, encryption, backup and monitoring.
- Review where data is stored and any legal or contractual requirements.
Plan the running costs
- Estimate ongoing costs and set monitoring and budgets so surprises are visible early.
Hand over properly
- Document the new environment, train the people who run it and agree support arrangements.
Questions to ask before you decide
- Which workloads move first, and why?
- What is the plan if the cutover fails?
- Who is responsible for backup and security in the new setup?
- How will we monitor performance and cost after go-live?
This guide is general planning guidance, not legal, security or compliance advice. Validate decisions for your own environment with qualified advisers.
