CYBERSECURITY READINESS QUESTIONS
Which security responsibilities need to be clear?
Security is easier to improve once every responsibility has a named owner. These questions are a starting point for that conversation.
Network boundary
- Who manages the firewall, and when were its rules last reviewed?
- Who has administrative access to network devices?
Devices and software
- Do all computers and servers have protection and a patching routine?
- Is there an up-to-date list of devices and software?
Access
- Is multi-factor authentication used for email, remote access and admin accounts?
- Is access removed promptly when people leave or change role?
People
- Do staff know how to spot and report suspicious emails?
- Is awareness training repeated regularly?
Detection and response
- Who sees security alerts, and what do they do next?
- Is there a written incident plan with contact details and escalation steps?
- Are backups protected and tested so recovery is possible?
Third parties
- Which vendors have access to your systems, and is that access controlled and reviewed?
Questions to ask before you decide
- Who owns each of these areas today?
- Which gaps would cause the most business harm?
- What can be fixed quickly, and what needs a project?
- When did we last test our incident plan?
